He enjoys putting together tours to this remarkable country. In February 2026, his third group arrived, and I was part of the planning and logistics. After living in Sweden for 13 years, I was also able to speak Swedish with the group, which added a personal touch from the very beginning.

Arrival in Johannesburg and a Journey into Soweto

After landing in the bustling airport in Johannesburg, 13 tired but happy Swedes greeted me as I drove up. From there we headed straight to Soweto, one of the largest townships in South Africa and once a centre of political resistance and violence.

Today Soweto is vibrant and full of life. It is home to the enormous Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, colourful cooling towers, busy malls, countless commuter taxis, and Vilakazi Street, where two Nobel Peace Prize winners once lived, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.

Our first stop was the Hector Pieterson Museum, commemorating the 1976 Soweto uprising. Hector was one of the schoolchildren shot during the protests, and the photograph of him being carried became one of the defining images of that era. His sister met us at the memorial and spoke gently about those difficult times and her journey toward forgiveness. I left with deep respect for her grace and perspective.

Vilakazi Street itself is alive with colour, music, restaurants, traditional dancers, and the everyday rhythm of township life. Pär loves the spontaneity of the culture, and as always, he reconnected with a group of singers who arrived at the restaurant and began harmonising without instruments. It was powerful. Locals joined in, adding ululation that filled the street with energy.

We enjoyed a buffet of traditional dishes, including pap and chicken feet, before visiting Mandela’s former home, which remains a major draw for visitors despite its commercial feel.

Pretoria Stopover

Fatigue from the long European flight set in quickly, so we drove the fastest route to Pretoria, checked into our hotel, and rested. Dinner at a local restaurant was excellent, and an early night prepared us for the next leg of the journey.

Into Wild Botswana

We were on the road just after 6 am, heading toward Botswana. After Polokwane the road showed signs of recent flood damage, but we reached the Platjan border post shortly after midday, where we switched to an open safari vehicle. Crossing into Botswana felt like entering another world.

Serolo Camp lies within the renowned Northern Tuli Game Reserve. Our first meal overlooked a waterhole where elephants came to drink. Over the next three days we experienced exceptional wildlife sightings, including leopard, lions across the river, giraffe, zebra, eland, wildebeest, and many bird species. The highlight for me was spending time with the elusive brown hyena, a rare sight anywhere in Africa.

Our guides, Joe and Darius, were outstanding, especially with bird identification. One afternoon we climbed a Eagle’s Rock for sweeping views of the river while scanning for wildlife. On our final day we spent half an hour with a large herd of elephants as they drank, splashed, and dusted themselves before disappearing into the bush. Afterwards, we stepped out to examine tracks, a privilege not possible in National Parks and reserves.

Evenings brought stories from Julie and Stuart, who run the lodge. Julie shared the dramatic account of Stuart surviving an elephant attack while guiding on foot, a rescue story that held us spellbound.

Botswana once again proved why it is so special, and I was genuinely sad to leave.

Conservation Experiences

The group joined the Insimbi Legacy Project, a conservation initiative dedicated to rhino protection and wildlife education. They participated in hands-on tracking and survival activities and witnessed a rhino capture to change a tracking collar, a rare and unforgettable experience that offered deep insight into conservation work in South Africa.

Above: Rhino Guardian experience with Insimbi Legacy Projects (Photo @Boskind Photography)

The Lowveld and Blyde River Canyon

Two days later we headed east through the lush Magoebaskloof Pass toward the Lowveld near Kruger National Park. En route we stopped at the spectacular Blyde River Canyon, the third largest canyon in the world. The views were breathtaking.

We also walked to a small waterfall on the Khadishi River, one of the few tufa rivers in existence, where moss slowly builds rock formations. The dense canopy created a jungle-like atmosphere.

Above: Spectacular views of the Blyde River Canyon (Pär Othänder)

CONSERVATION AND WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS

After overnighting at Cape Vulture Lodge, we visited the Moholoholo Animal Rehabilitation Centre, where visitors learn about the realities of conservation, from poisoning and poaching to the dangers of keeping wild animals as pets. Seeing the magnificent white lions up close was unforgettable.

A scenic boat cruise on the Blyde Dam followed, with sightings of hippos, crocodiles, birds, and even the elusive Samango monkey against the dramatic canyon backdrop.

Final Safari in Greater Kruger

Our final stop was Mohlabetsi Game Reserve, a Big Five reserve. Heavy rains had damaged roads, but the staff had worked tirelessly to restore access. Although the big cats eluded us, rhino and elephant sightings were extraordinary.

One encounter stood out. A large female elephant blocked our path at barely a metre’s distance while feeding on a fallen marula tree. For ten minutes we sat in complete silence, dwarfed by her presence, experiencing the privilege of being so close to a wild elephant.

Above: Up close elephant encounters at a watering hole. (Photo: Maria Kihlstedt-Raicevic)

Farewell

All too soon the journey came to an end. After dropping the group at Hoedspruit Airport, we said our goodbyes. Another adventure had concluded, new friendships had been formed, and once again Southern Africa had delivered an experience rich in history, wildlife, culture, and unforgettable moments.

Your First African Safari: East Africa or Southern Africa? A Luxury Traveller’s Guide

Quick Decision Guide for First-Time Travellers

Choose East Africa if you dream of iconic safari scenery, sweeping savannahs, and legendary wildlife spectacles.

Choose Southern Africa if you prefer privacy, flexibility, exceptional lodges, and a more relaxed pace.

East Africa Safaris: Iconic Landscapes and Legendary Wildlife

East Africa offers the classic safari imagery many travellers have dreamed of for years. Endless horizons, dramatic skies, and wildlife moving across open plains in remarkable numbers.

Safaris here are centred around renowned ecosystems such as the Serengeti National Park, Maasai Mara National Reserve, and Ngorongoro Crater.

Why travellers love East Africa

The Great Migration, one of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife events
Vast landscapes ideal for photography
Elegant tented camps in remote settings
A powerful sense of scale and movement

You may witness thousands of wildebeest crossing a river while crocodiles wait below, or see elephants silhouetted against an endless sunset.

Considerations

Longer travel distances between parks
Structured schedules due to national park regulations
Peak seasons can be busy in popular areas

East Africa is ideal for travellers who want a cinematic safari experience and iconic scenery.

Southern Africa Safaris: Private, Flexible, and Immersive

Southern Africa, particularly South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe, offers a more intimate safari style focused on exclusivity and personalised guiding.

Private reserves bordering Kruger National Park allow off-road driving, night safaris, and flexible schedules not permitted in national parks.

Why travellers love Southern Africa

Fewer vehicles at sightings
Closer wildlife encounters
Highly personalised guiding
Exceptional lodges with world-class hospitality

Many guests are surprised by how calm the experience feels. Instead of moving quickly between sightings, guides spend time observing behaviour and positioning you for the best viewing.

Private Reserve vs National Park: Why It Matters

Private Reserves

Off-road game viewing
Night drives and walking safaris
Limited vehicle numbers
Flexible daily schedules

National Parks

Strict rules and fixed road networks
Excellent wildlife viewing
Less flexibility
Can be busier during peak periods

For first-time travellers, private reserves often provide the most comfortable and rewarding introduction to safari.

Luxury Safari Destinations by Country

South Africa: The Ideal First Safari

Overview

South Africa is the most recommended destination for first-time safari travellers due to its combination of price, infrastructure, and accessibility. It blends exceptional wildlife with smooth travel connections.

Why travellers love it

Excellent value for money in private reserves bordering Kruger National Park

Easy international access with well-connected domestic flights

Simple to combine a safari with Cape Town, the Cape Winelands, and the Garden Route

Ideal for first-time safari travellers, couples, and families

Considerations

Public areas of Kruger can feel busy in peak periods

The most rewarding experiences are found in private concessions

For many first-time safari travellers, South Africa delivers the confidence of an easy journey with the magic of a truly wild experience.

Perfect for adventure seekers: 4x4 exploration, scenic flights, sandboarding, and photography expeditions

Considerations

Wildlife sightings are less concentrated

Longer distances can increase travel costs

Adventure travel often requires a higher activity level

Discover Namibia journeys

Exceptional guides and strong wildlife knowledge

Excellent value compared to neighbouring countries

Considerations

Fewer accommodation options in certain regions

Some areas require additional flight connections

View Zimbabwe safari options

Very low vehicle density and pristine wilderness

Superb big game viewing

Unique water-based safari activities

Considerations

Higher overall cost due to exclusivity and light aircraft transfers

Limited availability due to strict conservation models

Explore Botswana luxury safaris

Considerations

Infrastructure is improving but can be less developed than in South Africa

Travel often requires regional flights or road transfers

Discover Mozambique beach and marine adventures

Busy during peak migration months

High-season pricing can be significant

Considerations

Less flexibility due to park regulations

Higher park fees

Explore Tanzania safari journeys

Rwanda: Mountain Gorillas and Conservation

Overview
Rwanda is a refined, conservation-led destination best known for mountain gorilla trekking in the forests of Volcanoes National Park. Its small size and excellent infrastructure make it easy to combine with other experiences, such as scenic flights over volcanoes or luxury lodge stays.

Compact and easy to combine with other experiences

Considerations

High cost of gorilla permits

Limited traditional game safaris

Learn more about Rwanda

Uganda: Diverse Wildlife and Adventure

Overview
Uganda offers a more adventurous safari experience, combining primate encounters with classic safari regions. Mountain gorillas are found in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, while chimpanzee trekking is possible in Kibale Forest National Park.

Exceptional primate diversity

Rich, varied landscapes

Considerations

Infrastructure is less polished

Travel times can be long

Explore Uganda safari experiences

How to Decide Which Safari Is Right for You

Choose East Africa if you are drawn to iconic scenery, migration spectacles, and classic national park safaris.

Choose Southern Africa if you value privacy, flexibility, and a deeper, more personalised wildlife experience.

Many travellers eventually visit both regions, as each offers something entirely different.

January Trip Report: When the Wild Rewrites the Plan

January started off with a bang, but not in the way we expected.

The Kruger Lowveld region of South Africa, where we are based and from where most of our safaris operate, was hit by one of the worst floods in recorded history. The average annual rainfall here is around 500 mm per year, yet some areas in adjoining reserves received over 1,000 mm in just a few days. Rivers burst their banks, low-lying areas were submerged, and even next to our office a usually dry stream became a fast-flowing river rushing past the house. The damage was widespread, with several lodges forced to evacuate guests as access roads disappeared under water.

In the midst of this, we had a scheduled co-hosted safari with Sabie River Crossings, with guests due to arrive in Cape Town. Flights out of Hoedspruit were cancelled after part of the runway was washed away, but with flexibility and a fair bit of problem-solving, we managed to fly out and meet the group safely. Arriving in Cape Town felt like a collective exhale and the perfect place to officially kick off this 18 day adventure.

Cape Town delivered in spectacular fashion. Blue skies, calm seas, and ideal conditions set the tone for a memorable City and Sea journey. As this was a private tour guided by Hylton and I, we were able to adapt daily plans around the weather, always putting the group in the best possible position to enjoy each experience.

We visited the Boulders Beach penguin colony and spent time watching these endangered birds waddle between their nests and dive into the ocean. Rock hyraxes grazed casually among the vegetation, seemingly unfazed by the penguins or our presence. Seeing the penguins swimming and playing in the water was an early highlight.

From there, we continued to Cape Point, where we spotted ostriches strolling along the beachfront and baboons foraging along the rugged coastline. Those feeling adventurous climbed to the lighthouse lookout point, rewarded with sweeping views over False Bay. The drive home along Chapman’s Peak was a showstopper, with dramatic cliffs, winding roads, and endless photo opportunities.

The following day was devoted to Cape Town’s icons and history. We rode the aerial cableway to the top of Table Mountain, explored the colourful streets of the Bo-Kaap while sampling koesisters, and learned about the rich cultural history of the area. A walk through the Company’s Garden brought stories of the Dutch settlers to life, along with insights into the South African Parliament and the city’s layered past.

Above: The group enjoying colourful Bo-Kaap

Our final day in the Cape Winelands was the perfect finale. A wine and cheese pairing at the Fairview Estate Goat Shed was followed by a leisurely walk through the magnificent gardens of Babylonstoren, where the landscaping left everyone in awe. We ended the day at Delaire Graff, where exceptional wines, a world-class art collection, and a breathtaking setting combined to truly wow the group.

All the while, behind the scenes, Hylton and I were closely monitoring the flood situation back home. We knew that the original safari lodge planned for the next leg of the journey was still inaccessible. Quietly and efficiently, we secured an alternative property and negotiated a refund with the original lodge, all without burdening the guests with the logistics. They were aware of the flooding and knew flexibility would be required, but our goal was simple. Let them relax, enjoy the journey, and not miss a beat.

Once all arrangements were in place, we headed to the Hoedspruit region and into the Blyde Canyon area. Here, the group visited Moholoholo Animal Rehabilitation Centre and gained deeper insight into the conservation challenges facing African wildlife. A boat trip on the Blyde Dam followed, where the dam was over 100 percent full and the powerful Tufa Waterfalls were in full flow. Hippos playing in the water stole the show.

A community visit to Nourish EcoVillage and Sigagule Village offered a meaningful cultural exchange. Time was spent at a local crèche playing with the children, followed by a walk through the village where guests learned about the traditions of the Shangaan people. The experience was rounded off with a taste of traditional beer, cow’s head, pap, and mopane worms, a true local delicacy.

Above: Spending time with the children of Nourish Ecovillage

Safari officially began at Kruger Gate. Despite some roads still being closed, the next four days delivered exceptional wildlife encounters. Elephants blocked the roads, leopards lounged in trees, African wild dogs were followed on the hunt, and lions rested on granite boulders. The Kruger did not disappoint. A standout moment was being in exactly the right place at the right time when the Kruger veterinary team darted and re-collared an endangered African wild dog right next to our vehicle. Witnessing conservation in action is always a privilege.

Above: Witnessing conservation in action, as the SAPNParks Wildlife veterinarians darted and re-collared an African Wild Dog

Between game drives, guests relaxed at the swimming pool overlooking the Sabie River. Even lunch came with a show, as hippos were spotted fighting in the water below.

The journey ended in a private reserve in the Balule Game Reserve. Over the final four nights, guests enjoyed close encounters with white rhinos and were lucky enough to witness a leopard stalking and catching a baby warthog. Evenings were spent under a full moon, gathered around the fireplace, sharing stories and reflecting on an unforgettable journey.

A heartfelt thank you to Sabie River Crossings for the opportunity to co-host and guide this special group. January reminded us that Africa does not always follow the plan, but with experience, adaptability, and the right partners, it often delivers something even better. We look forward to many more adventures together.

Hylton Langley Safaris: 2025 in Reflection

Hylton Langley Safaris: Reflecting on 2025

As we look back on 2025, we are reminded once again why meaningful travel has the power to change lives. This year brought remarkable experiences for our guests, important milestones for our team, and continued growth in the communities and wilderness areas that inspire everything we do.

This year was especially meaningful as we celebrated 25 years of Hylton Langley Safaris. A quarter of a century guiding guests through Africa’s wild places has been a journey of discovery, connection, and purpose. We reflected on the thousands of guests we have guided, the communities we have supported, and the wildlife we have helped protect. Every safari, every shared sunset, and every encounter in the bush reminds us why we started this adventure, and why we remain committed to creating transformative experiences that honour both people and place.

With 34 safaris carefully planned and guided for 192 guests this past year, we witnessed extraordinary moments across Southern and East Africa. Each journey was designed with intention, supported by decades of guiding expertise, and rooted in our ongoing commitment to conservation and genuine connection.

Celebrating Transformative Travel

Above: Enjoying a moment with guests at the Southern-most tip of Africa

Every safari tells its own story. This year, our guests experienced close wildlife encounters in South Africa's Greater Kruger, remote wilderness in Botswana, and the sweeping landscapes of Kenya and Tanzania. Many trips included walking safaris, specialised photography experiences, and privately guided journeys with our team.

For some guests it was their first time in Africa. For many it was a long-awaited return. Time and again, we saw how nature shifts perspective and reminds people of what truly matters.

Growing Impact Through Ethical Travel

Our work is guided by a simple truth. When guests trust us to design their itineraries, and we partner with responsible lodges and operators, travel actively supports the protection of wild places and the communities who safeguard them.

This year, our safaris contributed directly to anti-poaching initiatives, community upliftment programmes, and educational projects. Through partnerships with organisations such as the Phakamani Foundation, which addresses poverty and chronic unemployment in rural South Africa by helping women create their own livelihoods through micro-enterprise, and Nourish Ecovillage, which empowers communities through sustainable food systems and training, our guests’ journeys created meaningful, lasting impact.

Strengthening Relationships Across Africa

A highlight of 2025 was the deepening of our partnerships across South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Tanzania. These relationships allow us to offer our guests the very best in guiding, hospitality, safety, and access to exclusive experiences.

Whether it was a privately booked lodge for a multigenerational family, a honeymoon itinerary in top-tier properties, or a hosted safari with specialised activities, our partners brought each journey to life with care and expertise.

Behind Every Safari Is a Team

This year, Hylton and I guided numerous expeditions, sharing our field knowledge and helping create life-changing moments for guests from around the world. Behind the scenes, we also worked tirelessly as a team to ensure smooth logistics, seamless connections, personalised touches, and the highest level of support at every stage of travel. We are proud of the trust our guests place in us. It is a true honour to design and guide experiences that stay with people long after they return home.

What We Are Grateful For

We are grateful for every guest who travelled with us in 2025.
We are grateful for every partner who shares our values.
We are grateful for every wildlife sighting that reminded us of the importance of protecting these ecosystems for future generations.

Above all, we are grateful for the sense of community that surrounds Hylton Langley Safaris. From families celebrating milestones to adventurers seeking something deeper, each of you has contributed to the story of this year.

Looking Ahead

As we prepare for 2026, we carry forward a renewed sense of purpose. Our focus remains on creating immersive, ethical, guest-centered safaris that honour both people and place.

Thank you to our partners, and the 192 incredible guests who made 2025 a year of growth, gratitude, and unforgettable wilderness moments. We look forward to welcoming many of you back to Africa’s wide open spaces.

Into the Wild: A Hosted Mobile Tented Safari Through Botswana

There is something grounding about returning to the wilderness with familiar faces. This journey felt especially meaningful as we hosted repeat guests on an unforgettable mobile safari through the wild heart of Botswana. The entire experience was expertly managed by the team at Chase Africa, who delivered something far beyond the ordinary.

Above: Exploring Botswana with Amy and Clint, and our local expert guide, Robson.

Our safari began in Maun, where anticipation was already building. This wasn’t a lodge-to-lodge trip. It was a mobile journey, with our dedicated team moving ahead of us every few days to set up our new camp in remote, unfenced locations. Each site came with spacious canvas tents, real beds, private bush bathrooms with pit toilets, and bucket showers heated over the fire. Every detail was considered and executed with care.

Our camp chef, Ida, created truly outstanding meals over open flames. From fresh-baked breads to hearty dinners, her cooking brought comfort and joy to every day in the bush. Our butler made sure our glasses were always full, whether it was coffee at sunrise or a chilled sundowner by the fire. The service throughout was seamless and full of warmth.

Above: Camp life- dinner under the stars, and our comfortable tents with en-suite ablution facilities

The first stop was Nxai Pans National Park. Here, the landscape shifted to salt flats and open horizons. Baines Baobabs stood proudly against the sky, and the vast stillness gave us a deep sense of space and solitude.

Above: The vastness of the Nxai Salt Pans

Next, we headed into the Xakanaxa region of Moremi. This was where the bush truly came alive. One morning we were treated to a rare and intense sighting: a female leopard and her adult cub fighting over an impala carcass. Not long after, we watched cheetahs sprinting after red lechwe across the floodplains. The chase stirred up enough noise to attract lions, adding to the already high tension. It was raw, real, and unforgettable.

Above: Cheetah brothers at Moremi.

In the Khwai Community area, our camp was set up along the waterways of the Okavango Delta. From here, we explored in mokoros, drifting quietly between the reeds. Elephant bulls stood feeding among the waterlilies, completely unbothered by our silent approach. That night, we were reminded of our surroundings when a hippo waded through our camp, its footsteps audible just outside our tents, as it splashed through the shallow waters.

Our journey continued to the Mababe region near Savuti. This was true big cat country. As we sat down to dinner on our first evening there, a sudden crash of hooves and the sound of branches snapping startled us. Lions were hunting right near camp. Their deep roars carried through the darkness for hours afterward, creating an atmosphere that was both thrilling and deeply humbling.

Above: The resident pride that roared throughout the night, mere meters from our unfenced campsite.

We also visited ancient San rock art sites in this area. Standing before those paintings, some hundreds of years old, added a historical layer to the experience. It was a quiet but powerful moment, connecting us with the people who once called this land home.

Our final leg took us north to Chobe, a region famous for its elephant herds and enormous crocodiles. It was the perfect conclusion to a journey that had offered so many layers of adventure, beauty, and learning.

Mobile safaris like this one offer a different rhythm. They are slower, more immersive, and deeply connected to the land. Everything is taken care of, from the meals to the movement, allowing guests to simply soak it all in. However, it is important to note that the long drives between regions can be tiring. For those who prefer to avoid extended hours on the bumpy road, this may not be the right fit.

To the Chase Africa team, thank you. Your professionalism, warmth, and tireless behind-the-scenes work made this journey exceptional for every single guest. From the set-up crews, kitchen team, and our passionate guide Robson, your attention to detail and hospitality made us feel at home in the heart of the wilderness.

Botswana once again delivered, and we are already looking forward to the next adventure.

From Whales to Waterways - A Safari Across South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe

There is something truly special about taking guests on a journey that links some of Africa’s most iconic landscapes. From dramatic coastlines and flooded delta channels to the thundering majesty of Victoria Falls, this recent hosted safari was a perfect blend of luxury, adventure, and raw wilderness. I couldn’t have asked for better sightings or a more enthusiastic group to share them with.

The Journey Begins: Cape Winelands
We started in the Cape Winelands, where the crisp air and bold flavours set the tone for what was to come. At Tokara, we enjoyed award-winning wines with views over Stellenbosch Valley. Later, we savoured a memorable meal at Babel, Babylonstoren, where fresh garden produce, artful plating, and warm service made every bite a delight. It was the perfect sensory start to the adventure.

Above: Chilly Cape Town weather could not prevent us from having a "whale of a time"

Singita Sojourn: Pangolin Magic
After our time in the Cape, we parted ways briefly so our guests could enjoy the warm hospitality at Singita Lebombo and Boulders Lodge. During that time, one of the rarest and most magical sightings happened. Lawrence Mkansi, my trusted tracker and dear friend, managed to track down a super elusive pangolin in broad daylight. Witnessing this shy, usually nocturnal creature in the wild was a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

Into the Wild: The Okavango Delta – Kwetsani Camp

Above: Red Lechwe running through the Delta

We reunited in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, where floodwaters were the highest I have seen in years. We reached Kwetsani Camp by speedboat, gliding through mirrored channels lined with papyrus. The camp was surrounded by water and shared with a pride of lions that made themselves at home.

Game viewing was extraordinary. Red Lechwe splashed through the flooded plains, and lions moved silently through camp. One evening, as we sat around the firepit in the unfenced camp, two lions reunited just a few metres away. They greeted each other with deep rumbles and gentle nuzzles. It was an intimate and powerful moment I will never forget.

We also explored by boat, passing between herds of elephants as they waded through the channels. On Hundu Island, we were lucky enough to spot an African wild dog. Elusive and always on the move, it gave us a thrilling glimpse before disappearing into the bush.

Linyanti Magic: Duma Tau
From the Delta, we travelled to Duma Tau in Linyanti. The camp is set on a wide channel where elephants wade and swim, visible right from our rooms. One morning brought great laughter as a group of young lions clumsily climbed into a fallen mopane tree. We held our breath, expecting the tree to give way, but it stood strong.

Above: The branch manager.

Our last evening at Duma Tau gifted us one of the most memorable sightings of the trip. A female leopard and her two sub-adult cubs rested elegantly in the branches of a sprawling tree. The mother’s blue-green eyes met mine, soulful and wild. It was a moment of pure magic.

Victoria Falls: The Grand Finale
We ended our journey in Zimbabwe at The Palm River Hotel, perfectly situated on the banks of the Zambezi River. The Falls were in full flood, thunderous and misty, drenching us with their spray. We also experienced a bird’s-eye view from a helicopter flight above the roaring water. The scale and power of the falls left us breathless.

Final Reflections
This trip was a tapestry of moments that stirred every sense. The scent of wild sage, the deep roar of lions at night, the silky tannins of a well-aged wine, the shimmer of floodwaters under the sun, and the mist of Victoria Falls on our skin. From one extraordinary landscape to the next, we shared laughter, awe, and that indescribable connection to Africa.

Until the next adventure

A Swedish Safari Adventure: Exploring South Africa and Botswana

A Glimpse Into South Africa’s Past

Our adventure began in Johannesburg, where we took a powerful detour through the streets of Soweto, a place that has been at the epicenter of South Africa’s fight for freedom. Driving through the impoverished townships, our guests got a sobering insight into the stark realities of urban South African life. Millions of people call these areas home, navigating a world of resilience and hope.

At Vilakazi Street—the only street in the world to have housed two Nobel Peace Prize winners, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu—we soaked up the vibrant atmosphere. As local singers and dancers performed in the lively restaurant scene, the energy was infectious, and I couldn’t help but enjoy the rare opportunity to speak Swedish again with our guests.

From Soweto, we made our way to Pretoria, stopping at Fort Klapperkop for a breathtaking view over South Africa’s capital city. The group spent their first night on African soil, filled with anticipation for what lay ahead.

Tracking Rhinos in the Bush

The next morning, we set off towards Chinaka Lodge, near the small town of Alldays. Here, I parted ways with the group for two nights as they immersed themselves in the world of rhino conservation. Guided by expert trackers and anti-poaching teams, they assisted in darting a rhino, a moment that left a deep impact on everyone. Some guests even had the opportunity to take to the skies in a helicopter with wildlife vets as they searched for these magnificent creatures—an experience few will ever forget.

Upon reuniting, we visited a local aloe factory to learn about the incredible properties of this indigenous plant before passing through Alldays, a historic meeting point between South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. Within moments, we had blinked and the tiny town was behind us.

Into the Wild: Botswana’s Tuli Block

Navigating the rough, flood-damaged roads, we reached the remote Platjan border post, where the friendly border officials made crossing into Botswana seamless. The next stretch of the journey was a true African adventure—bumping along dirt tracks that were more suited for a 4x4 than our mini-bus van and trailer! But the reward was worth it: arriving at Serolo Lodge in the breathtaking Tuli Block, where we would spend three nights in the wilderness.

The days that followed were filled with extraordinary sightings. We explored sandstone ridges and golden fields blanketed in yellow tribulus flowers, encountering a young male lion feasting on a zebra, two separate leopard sightings, and an impressive herd of 200 eland. A personal highlight for me was spotting my first-ever brown hyena—a mammal lifer! The lion tracking experience was nothing short of exhilarating, as we followed the trail of a lioness and her sub-adult cub deep into the bush.

Sunsets here were magical, casting golden hues over the uninhabited landscape. The remoteness of Serolo was humbling, and the lodge staff welcomed us warmly, sharing stories of life in this secluded part of Botswana.

The Journey Back: Into the Heart of the Lowveld

Our return journey to South Africa turned into a slow, muddy expedition, as heavy rains and localized flooding stretched a short trip into a three-hour adventure. Once back on South African soil, we continued toward the Lowveld, traversing a changing landscape—from bushveld to the misty rainforests of Magoebaskloof, through the fruit-laden farmlands of Tzaneen, and past the game-breeding farms of Gravelotte.

Finally, we arrived at Klaserie Game Reserve in the Greater Kruger ecosystem, where our next stop, Tulela Safari Lodge, awaited. This exclusive-use camp was the epitome of luxury, with warm hospitality, exquisite cuisine, and a team that made us feel at home. The timing couldn’t have been better—it was Valentine’s Day, and the camp staff went above and beyond, surprising us with bubble baths filled with rose petals and heart-shaped cookies on our beds.

Our time at Tulela was nothing short of spectacular. We tracked two lionesses feeding on a buffalo kill, enjoyed close encounters with elephants, and marveled at a young, relaxed leopard tom. An unexpected African rainstorm transformed the dry riverbed in front of camp into a flowing waterway, giving our guests the thrilling adventure of crossing a rising river in a safari vehicle.

One of the most memorable moments was our surprise bush breakfast under Big Jack, a towering Jackalberry tree. There, in the heart of the wilderness, we toasted our adventure with a champagne breakfast, shaded by its sprawling canopy.

A Grand Finale at Blyde River Canyon
As our journey neared its end, we departed early for a final adventure: a boat cruise on the Blyde Dam. From the water, we took in the breathtaking views of Blyde River Canyon, the third-largest canyon in the world. The recent rains had turned the tufa waterfall into a powerful spectacle, cascading dramatically over the cliffs. A final highlight was spotting a crocodile cruising through the water, offering an up-close look at this prehistoric predator.

And just like that, our journey came full circle. At Hoedspruit Airport, I bid farewell to our wonderful Swedish guests as they continued on to Cape Town, hearts full of memories and cameras filled with spectacular moments.

A huge thank you to Pär Öthander for the opportunity to co-design and guide this incredible safari. The adventure doesn’t end here—we look forward to many more journeys together!

Traditionally, January is a quieter travel month, as many people settle back into work routines after the holidays. But for those in the know, it’s one of the best times to visit—off-peak travel means fewer crowds, warm summer days, and incredible wildlife encounters.

This month, we hosted two unforgettable safaris:

A South African Extravaganza for Returning Guests
For our repeat guests, Tomas and Marie, we curated a journey that avoided the typical tourist trail, focusing instead on their personal interests.

Their adventure began in Hermanus, where they were lucky enough to spot whales and dolphins right from their hotel room. Next, wi

th a passion for wine and art, they returned to Stellenbosch, revisiting Babylonstoren and immersing themselves in the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden.

In Cape Town, we arranged a stay along Blouberg Beach, offering uninterrupted views of Table Mountain—a breathtaking sight, especially at sunset. From there, they traveled to Blyde River Canyon, where we joined them for a scenic boat cruise. With the recent rains, the Tufa waterfall was in full force, creating spectacular photo opportunities.

The final leg of their journey took them deep into the Greater Kruger National Park, where two safari camps provided them with exceptional wildlife encounters. From lions on the hunt to elephants grazing peacefully, every game drive delivered unforgettable moments. Tomas and Marie, thank you for trusting us once again to craft your perfect safari!

A Missionary Safari in Kruger

Our second hosted trip took a group of missionaries into Kruger National Park for an immersive wildlife experience. Sightings were no thing short of spectacular—highlights included a large Sable bull, two separate packs of endangered African wild dogs, and countless elephants feasting on marula fruit, a seasonal favorite.

Looking Ahead

While hosting these incredible journeys, we also took time this month to update our website, design, and confirm several upcoming safaris—some for this year and even into 2026! Whether you're dreaming of an off-peak escape or planning a future adventure, we’re here to make it happen.

It’s been a quarter of a century since we embarked on this safari adventure, and the love for Africa that ignited our journey has only grown stronger.

Africa has a way of stirring the soul like no other place on Earth. Some may focus on the continent’s political turmoil, the challenges governments face, or the contrast between Western mindsets and African cultures. But for me, the magic of Africa lies in something much deeper.

When you set aside the complexities and look beyond the surface, Africa reveals itself in its vast, open spaces, its vibrant smells, and the colors of the landscape. It’s in the warmth of the people’s smiles, the gentle hum of life, the rhythmic pulse of the land, and the endless contrasts. From donkeys pulling carts to women grinding corn in gourds, from the poorest villages to the most luxurious resorts, Africa is a place of stark contrasts—and yet it’s all part of the same beautiful story.

And then there’s the bush, the untamed wilderness where nature thrives in all its glory.

After spending 13 years in Sweden, my late wife Ingrid, our two children, and I returned to South Africa. As a game ranger before I moved to Sweden, the call of the bush was always in my blood. It was time to return.

Relocating to a new country is never easy. But in the year 2000, at 39 years old, with no job or income, we found ourselves in White River, South Africa. The first year was difficult—paying bills, renting a house, and adjusting to a new way of life. Since we spoke Swedish, we naturally turned to the Swedish market for business.

I attended guiding courses and became an accredited tour guide. Slowly but surely, our dream started to take shape. We reached out to Arne Rudler, a Swedish tour operator from Jambo Tours, that changed everything. Arne came to meet us in White River, and although we were new to the business, he recognized our potential.

From that moment, Nature, Culture and Wild Animals (Natur, Kultur och Vilda Djur) was born. A full year passed before we received our first group of six clients. We were over the moon. It was the beginning of something extraordinary. By the next year, we started receiving more and more tours from Sweden.

Swedes are incredibly rewarding to work with, and having both South African and Swedish cultures allowed us to connect on a deeper level, enriching our tours. The highlight of every trip was always a safari in Kruger National Park, where guests experienced some of the most incredible wildlife sightings imaginable. Over time we invested in our fleet of safari vehicles.

Our success with Nature, Culture and Wild Animals allowed us to expand into upmarket tours, led by my wife Ingrid. While she wasn’t initially a natural guide, she pushed herself beyond her limits and excelled. I am immensely proud of her. As the years passed, we began offering tours to Botswana and Namibia, creating unforgettable adventures for our guests. One guest, called his Botswana trip the best of his life—a remarkable compliment, given his extensive travels.

But then, in 2020, the world changed.

The COVID-19 pandemic hit, and my wife Ingrid, who had been battling cancer, passed away. The loss was devastating, and with the travel industry coming to a standstill, we faced an uncertain future. I decided to return to Sweden, ready to give up on the career I loved.

But fate had other plans.

A dear family friend, Margaux, came to say goodbye. She had freelanced with us in the past and was now working at Singita, one of the top lodges in Africa. Little did I know, this visit would change the course of my life. Margaux’s stay turned into something much more, and before long, we were married in 2022. We made the move to Hoedspruit, the South African Safari Capital, and with God's intervention, a new chapter in both our personal and professional lives began.

Together, Margaux and I now run Hylton Langley Safaris from our home, which is situated on a small game reserve that overlooks Kruger National Park in the distance. We guide our clients when we can, and we are grateful for the many clients we’ve worked with. Since Margaux’s arrival, our business has evolved significantly, with a strong focus on creating custom safaris tailored to our clients’ specific desires. We’ve expanded to offer high-end luxury tours throughout Southern and Eastern Africa, while still providing intimate, exclusive experiences, such as private game drives in the Kruger National Park using our own safari vehicle.

This new chapter has taken us across Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and, of course, South Africa. Along the way, we’ve made new friends, experienced diverse cultures, and explored some of the most breathtaking wildlife destinations on the planet. What a gift it is to love what we do, and even more so to see our clients’ dreams come true.

As we mark our 25th anniversary, we are filled with gratitude for the journey we’ve taken and the people who’ve been part of it. Here’s to the next 25 years of adventures, memories, and dreams realized. Thank you for being part of our journey.

Safari Adventures: Unforgettable experiences in 2024

Unparalleled Safari Destinations

This year, we organized 21 extraordinary safari trips for 125 of our adventurous clients, exploring over 17 of Africa's wilderness reserves and booking over 150 nights across Africa. Each destination offered a unique glimpse into the continent's rich biodiversity, from the iconic Kruger National Park in South Africa to the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

Memorable Experiences

Our clients enjoyed a myriad of exhilarating activities:

Learning about marine ecology with a marine biologist in Mozambique.

Soaring above the Serengeti Plains in a hot air balloon during the Great Migration.

Running through the Masai Mara with a Kenyan.

Swimming in the Devil’s Pool on the Zambezi River.

Witnessing elephants swimming during a safari boat cruise on the Chobe River.

Sleeping under the stars in Kruger National Park.

Incredible Wildlife Encounters

Safari-goers were treated to some of the rarest wildlife sightings:

A dugong in its natural habitat.

Lions taking down a buffalo.

A pack of endangered African wild dogs.

A rare interaction between a black rhino cow, her calf, and a white rhino bull.

The elusive pangolin.

A white lioness and her cub from the Birmingham Pride.

Achievements and Milestones
This year has been one of growth and meaningful milestones for Hylton Langley Safaris. We are proud to have earned the prestigious TripAdvisor Traveler’s Choice Award, a reflection of our unwavering commitment to excellence. Our new logo marks the start of an exciting chapter, while our investment in solar energy has made our office 100% off-grid, aligning with our dedication to sustainability. A special highlight has been the generosity of our guests who contributed to our Community Upliftment Partnership Programs, providing invaluable resources to local communities bordering Kruger. Thank you for being part of this remarkable journey—together, we are making a difference and creating adventures that truly matter.

Singita is known for its incredible food and immersive African experiences, and this malva pudding recipe is one of the best I’ve come across. With its addition of apricot jam and simple cream-based sauce, it strikes the perfect balance between richness and simplicity. Plus, it’s incredibly easy to prepare!

Malva Pudding: A Simple yet Delicious South African Treat

One of the best things about Malva pudding is its simplicity. Despite its rich, toffee-like taste that might lead you to think it requires fancy ingredients or complex baking methods, this dessert is surprisingly easy to make. Most of the ingredients are pantry staples – perfect for when you want to treat your loved ones to something special without too much fuss. The only ingredient you might not have on hand is the apricot jam, but that’s what gives the pudding its distinct flavor.

Before you dive into the recipe, remember that Malva pudding is best served warm, ideally 10-15 minutes after it comes out of the oven. This allows the creamy sauce to soak into the pudding, making each bite melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The best part? You pour the sauce over the pudding immediately after baking, so there’s very little waiting!

Singita's Malva Pudding Recipe

Serves 12-15

Ingredients:

360g cake wheat flour
Pinch of salt
15ml bicarbonate of soda
3 eggs
600g sugar
45ml smooth apricot jam
45ml melted butter
750ml milk
15ml vinegar

Sauce Ingredients:

125ml cream
60g butter
100g sugar

Method:

1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a 30cm x 15cm x 5cm baking dish with butter.
2. Sift the flour, salt, and bicarbonate of soda together in a mixing bowl.
3. In another bowl, whisk the eggs and sugar together until light and fluffy. Then, whisk in the apricot jam.
4. Melt the butter and add the milk. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the egg mixture, alternating with the milk mixture. Mix until well incorporated.
5. Scrape down the sides of the bowl, then add the vinegar and mix thoroughly.
6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown.
7. While the pudding is baking, prepare the sauce: combine all sauce ingredients in a pan and bring to a boil. Stir until the sugar has dissolved.
8. Once the pudding is out of the oven, poke holes in it using a skewer or fork, and pour the hot sauce over the pudding, allowing it to soak in.
9. Serve warm, and enjoy the taste of South Africa with your family and friends!

Serving Suggestions:

For the perfect South African dessert experience, serve your Malva pudding with ice cream or warm custard. As mentioned, it’s best served still warm, so you’ll want to prepare it just an hour before you plan to eat. Personally, our family loves this recipe with a good cup of coffee and some vanilla custard. The flavors complement each other perfectly, creating the ultimate indulgent treat.

Whether you're reliving a safari adventure or looking forward to one, sharing a plate of this delicious South African dessert brings a piece of Africa into your home. It’s an easy way to celebrate the festive season in true South African style – and a great conversation starter for family gatherings.

Happy baking, and may your festive season be filled with joy, love, and a little taste of Africa!

MalaMala Magic: Our Site Inspection Experience

MalaMala Game Reserve is renowned for its expansive traversing area, the largest in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, and its prime access to the wildlife-rich Sand River. For Hylton, this visit carried personal significance, as his career as a safari guide began here in 1984. Walking through the camp again and reminiscing about his early days in the field, where his passion for ecotourism was first ignited, made this visit a profoundly nostalgic journey.

Our stay at MalaMala Main Camp was nothing short of exceptional. The camp offers a blend of timeless elegance and comfort, with spacious accommodations, excellent dining, and a welcoming atmosphere. On a personal note, the team went out of their way to make my birthday truly special, surprising me with a beautiful cake and a heartfelt celebration. The camp’s idyllic location along the Sand River allowed us to view wildlife right from the lodge, setting the tone for the incredible game drives that followed.

Above: A birthday celebration with a view.

The wildlife sightings during our stay were nothing short of spectacular. From the outset, MalaMala showcased its reputation as a haven for exceptional game viewing. On our first game drive, we encountered three different leopards, including one that had hoisted its impala kill high into a Jackalberry tree.

As dusk fell, we found a pride of lions making their way to the Sand River, where they quenched their thirst before crossing the water under a starry sky—a magical moment that highlighted the beauty of nature’s rhythm.

Throughout our stay, the diversity of sightings never ceased to amaze us. Herds of elephants gathered at the river to drink and bathe, providing gentle and awe-inspiring moments. The highlight of one drive was an extraordinary sighting of six white rhinos together, a powerful testament to MalaMala’s anti-poaching efforts and commitment to conservation.

As the sun set over the Sand River, we followed a lion that led us to three dominant males feeding on a buffalo carcass. One of the males surprised us by shifting his attention to a nearby lioness, and we witnessed an unexpected mating ritual. (Usually, when lions are mating, they are too preoccupied with mating, focussing all of their attention and energy the female, and not on feeding).

One of the most thrilling moments of our stay unfolded as we followed up on a report of African wild dogs, my personal favorite predators. As we approached, we were swept into a scene of high drama. The pack was on the hunt, moving with lightning speed and relentless coordination as they targeted a herd of impala. Dust filled the air as the dogs darted through the bush, their agility and teamwork mesmerizing to witness. The impala lamb, in a desperate bid for survival, zigzagged through the terrain, narrowly escaping the jaws of its pursuers. Although the hunt ended in a lucky escape for the impala, the energy and strategy displayed by the wild dogs left us in awe, a reminder of the raw intensity of life in the wild.

Between game drives, we enjoyed hearty breakfasts and conducted a thorough site inspection of MalaMala Main Camp, Sable Camp, and Rattray’s Camp. Hylton shared fond memories of his guiding days as we toured the familiar spaces of Main Camp and Sable Camp. These camps retain their classic safari charm while offering exceptional service and comfort. Rattray’s Camp, MalaMala’s premier offering, is a sanctuary of luxury. With only four guests per vehicle and private plunge pools for each suite, Rattray’s Camp epitomizes exclusivity and refined elegance, making it an ideal choice for discerning travelers.

Our final morning brought another remarkable game drive, during which we located the lioness we had seen earlier. She had successfully reunited with her pride, accompanied by two of the resident males. This fitting conclusion to our stay underscored the powerful family dynamics and adaptability of lions in the wild.

While our focus was primarily on big game, we also casually recorded over 120 bird species, a testament to the rich biodiversity of MalaMala. Among the birding highlights was a sighting of broad-billed rollers, a rare treat that added to the magic of our visit.

MalaMala Game Reserve stands out for its vast traversing rights, exceptional guiding team, and luxurious lodges, ensuring every guest enjoys an unforgettable safari experience. Its dedication to conservation and exclusive game-viewing opportunities further solidify its place as one of South Africa’s premier destinations.

We left MalaMala with cherished memories and a deep appreciation for this iconic reserve. We are thrilled to offer our future guests the opportunity to experience this magical destination for themselves.

A Grand Finale: The Majestic Ngorongoro Crater

We began by making our way to Manyara Airstrip, where our guide greeted us for the transfer to the opulent &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge. Perched dramatically on the crater’s rim, this luxurious lodge felt like a mix of Maasai culture and Versailles opulence, with crystal chandeliers, multiple fireplaces, and lavish décor providing a cozy escape from the high-altitude chill.

Above: Mating lions in the Ngorongoro Crater photographed by Margaux Langley.

Descending into the Crater, often described as the “Garden of Eden,” we were immediately enveloped by the abundance of wildlife. On our first afternoon, we stumbled upon a pair of mating lions, spending ample time photographing these honeymooners as the afternoon sun bathed them in golden light. This was followed by an exciting sighting of golden jackals, a new mammal lifer for the trip.

Above: A Golden Jackal, photographed by Margaux Langley

The next morning, we set off in the pre-dawn darkness, our mission clear: to find the elusive black rhino—the final member of the Big 5 we had yet to encounter. As we descended the crater walls, the adventure began in earnest. Along the way, we watched a pride of lions stalk and successfully hunt a wildebeest, the drama unfolding right before our eyes.

Above: The lions were successful at catching one of the wildebeest. Photo by Margaux Langley

But the highlight of the morning came as we reached an elevated spot, where, in the distance, a black rhino rested. Dennis was overjoyed, marking off a long-held item on his safari bucket list.

The journey back to the lodge offered us stunning views of flamingo-dotted lakes, herds of zebra and buffalo, and majestic tusker elephants. What a grand finale to our East African adventure!

Above: A magnificent Big Tusker in the Ngorongoro Crater. Photo by Margaux Langley

Upon our return, a bubble bath filled with red rose petals awaited us—a fittingly romantic gesture from one of Africa’s most enchanting lodges.

As this marked our last evening together, we had arranged a special surprise for Dennis, who had expressed his newfound desire to become a guide. In collaboration with the wonderful &Beyond team, we held a prizegiving ceremony, presenting Dennis with a junior guiding certificate. The lodge staff went above and beyond by creating name badges for both Dennis and Sherri, officially welcoming them to the &Beyond guiding team.

And so, our time in East Africa came to a close—filled with unforgettable sightings, adventures, laughter, and memories that will last a lifetime. We are forever grateful for this incredible journey and invite you to explore it further through our blog series. Let this story inspire your own safari dreams with Hylton Langley Safaris—Africa awaits!

Our stay at Orpen Kruger Lodge gave us easy access to explore the central region of Kruger National Park. With the bush dry from the end of winter, animals gathered around the last remaining waterholes. The highlight? Sitting in awe as a massive herd of buffalo, hundreds strong, marched past our vehicle on their way to drink—until chaos struck! Two male lions stealthily stalked the herd and took down a straggler in full view of us. What a moment!

Other Kruger highlights included a pack of endangered African wild dogs with their adorable pups and a cheetah out on patrol.

Photo ©Marius Nortje. Our guests enjoy a front row seat with Hylton positioning our vehicle in the best spot to view the endangered African Wild Dogs

Next up was the exclusive Tulela Mondzo Lodge in Klaserie Game Reserve, where we had the private villa all to ourselves. It was the perfect setting for our group to unwind and explore the breathtaking mopane bushveld. We spent one magical night sleeping under the stars with a nearly full moon above, and another morning enjoying a surprise bush breakfast under an ancient Jackalberry tree.

The wildlife sightings didn’t disappoint either! We spotted a shy leopard perched on a termite mound as two lionesses strolled by, completely unaware of its presence.

© Paul Engelhard. A close encounter with a lioness.

We also came across a Big Tusker elephant bull, and a newborn baby giraffe, and to top it off, we found a leopardess feasting on a fresh kill in a marula tree, keeping her meal safe from lurking hyenas below.

While Hylton and I bid farewell to the group, their adventure didn’t stop there! In Victoria Falls, they had the once-in-a-lifetime experience of swimming in Devil’s Pool right on the edge of the mighty falls. They also enjoyed a luxury dinner cruise on the Zambezi River, and to cap it all off, they soared high above the falls on the "Flight of Angels" helicopter tour—a breathtaking way to end the trip.

A huge thank you to Teresa for once again allowing us to be part of this incredible adventure with her family and friends. It was a journey filled with laughter, awe, and memories that will last a lifetime. We truly hope you all had as much fun as we did, and we can’t wait to do it again!

Grumeti Game Reserve Adventure: A Luxurious Wilderness Escape

Upon our arrival, we were greeted by our local guide, Charles, who guided us through this pristine wilderness with an intimate knowledge of the land and its wildlife. The &Beyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge, nestled on the banks of the river, was undoubtedly the most spectacular accommodation of our safari. With its luxurious yet natural design, we found ourselves spending hours simply watching animals come to the river to quench their thirst, as life ebbed and flowed around us. The private splash pool offered a refreshing escape from the midday heat, while the expansive grand room invited us to slow down and soak in the serene surroundings.

One of the true perks of staying at Grumeti during this time was the tranquility. With the Great Migration having already passed through the region, we had the reserve nearly to ourselves, enjoying private and uninterrupted wildlife sightings. We were fortunate to encounter the Nyasarori Pride and their cubs, watching these majestic lions in their natural habitat. The Nyasarori males had also taken down a massive giraffe bull during the night, and we observed them feeding on the carcass—a rare and powerful sight.

The surprises didn’t end there. A stunning female leopard was spotted resting gracefully in a towering sausage tree, providing a perfect photo opportunity.

We also encountered a clan of spotted hyenas at a dam, feasting on a wildebeest carcass they had scavenged. Each day brought a new chapter of the untamed wilderness to life, with Charles ensuring we were always in the right place at the right time.

Our stay at Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge was undoubtedly one of the trip's highlights, and it’s no surprise that this extraordinary property has been awarded a prestigious spot in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards. We can personally attest to its well-deserved acclaim.

Our journey started with a bit of adventure—delayed planes, slow border crossings, and rainy weather meant we arrived a couple of hours later than planned. We even saw a plane that had slipped off the runway and was perched among the trees, though fortunately, everyone on board was safe and uninjured. Upon arrival at Kogatende, our guide Hassan, welcomed us warmly, ensuring that the challenges of the day were quickly forgotten.

Life at Serengeti Under Canvas

Serengeti Under Canvas offers a truly immersive experience, with no running water but plenty of comfort. Daniel, our dedicated butler, prepared hot showers on a donkey boiler, making sure we were refreshed after a long day of travel. As night fell, we were lulled to sleep by the chorus of a million wildebeest and the distant roars of lions—a truly unforgettable soundtrack to our nights in the Serengeti.

Exceptional Game Viewing

The game viewing in the Northern Serengeti was nothing short of spectacular. Large herds of wildebeest were still concentrated in this area, providing endless opportunities to witness the Great Migration in all its glory. We were fortunate enough to experience a thrilling hot air balloon safari with Serengeti Balloon Safaris. Our skilled pilot guided us over the plains, offering stunning aerial views of hippos in the Mara River, a hyena attempting to hunt a solitary wildebeest, and a buffalo charging across the rocky outcrop-dotted landscape.

River Crossings and Wildlife Encounters

We witnessed two river crossings, with herds of wildebeest bravely navigating the treacherous waters, while the resident crocodiles once again went hungry. The most fascinating moment came when a mega herd attempted to cross the Sand River. Though the thick vegetation obscured our view of the crossing itself, we watched in awe as thousands of wildebeest filed past us. Suddenly, the herd was thrown into chaos as two enormous elephant bulls in musth emerged, their fierce battle sending wildebeest stampeding back towards us.

Unexpected Adventures

Our adventure didn’t stop there. Poor Hassan managed to get our vehicle stuck in a muddy ditch, adding an extra layer of excitement to our day. Fortunately, everyone was safe—though I did receive some good-natured teasing about my “bougie” sandals, which were far from practical bush shoes. It was a reminder that in the wild, you always need to be prepared for the unexpected!

Stay tuned for the next part of our journey as we continue exploring the wonders of East Africa. And if you’re ready to create your own safari memories, reach out to us today and start planning your unforgettable adventure with Hylton Langley Safaris!

Epic Safari Adventure: Mara Triangle with Hylton Langley Safaris

Arrival in Nairobi

Our adventure began in Nairobi, where the group spent a relaxing night, soaking in the vibrant city vibes before setting off on their safari escapade.

The next morning, we took a short flight to Kichwa Tembo, where our exceptional guide, Robert, greeted us warmly. From there, we headed to the luxurious Angama Mara lodge, our home for the next three nights.

Angama Mara Lodge

© Angama Mara: View from the room

Perched high above the rolling plains, Angama Mara offers unparalleled views of the Maasai Mara. The lodge’s design is inspired by the romance of "Out of Africa," with tented suites that blend seamlessly into the landscape, offering floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the breathtaking panoramas below. Whether you’re lounging on your deck or enjoying a delicious meal, the vistas of the savannah stretching out endlessly before you are truly mesmerizing.

Exceptional Safari Experiences

With Robert's expertise, we experienced safari outings that were nothing short of extraordinary. Here are some of the unforgettable highlights:

Lion Drama:

We witnessed a territorial male lion chasing two lionesses who had ventured into his territory. His powerful roars echoed across the plains as he pursued the fleeing females, providing a thrilling and raw display of nature's drama.

Newborn Giraffe:

A magical moment unfolded as we came across a newborn Maasai giraffe calf, only a couple of hours old. It wobbled on its legs, initially mistaking our vehicle for its mother. Thankfully, the real mom arrived soon after, and together, they slowly moved into the thickets.

Mara River Crossing:

The ultimate highlight of our safari was witnessing our first Mara River crossing. Robert expertly positioned our vehicle, giving us a front-row seat to a small herd of wildebeest and zebra bravely crossing the raging river. Despite the presence of hippos and crocodiles, this herd managed to pass through unscathed, as the satiated crocodiles showed no interest in them.

Kenyan Hospitality

What truly stood out during our stay was the warm Kenyan hospitality. Lodge manager George and our butler Jackton went above and beyond to ensure our comfort and delight. They hosted us in the Shamba garden for a delightful lunch, arranged a special Maasai dance during sunset, and organized a sundowner drinks stop at the iconic "Out of Africa" filming location.

Dennis and Sherri even had the unique opportunity to go on a run with a Kenyan, weaving through fields dotted with zebras and giraffes. Meanwhile, Hylton and I enjoyed birding with a Maasai naturalist, adding new lifers like the African Blue Flycatcher and Schalow's Turaco to our bird-watching list.

We can’t recommend Angama Mara enough. The combination of breathtaking landscapes, exceptional wildlife sightings, and heartfelt hospitality makes it an unmissable destination.

Stay tuned for our next blog post as we continue our Migration Madness Expedition across East Africa. There are more adventures and unforgettable moments on the horizon!

They had the opportunity to experience the thrill of a lifetime across four stunning Southern African countries.

Cape Town: The Mother City

Our adventure kicked off in the vibrant heart of South Africa, Cape Town. With Blouberg Beach as our home base, we dove headfirst into the city's charms. The highlights? A breathtaking cable car ride up Table Mountain, offering panoramic views that left us speechless. A scenic drive along the iconic Chapman’s Peak Drive was nothing short of spectacular.

Next, we made friends with the adorable penguins at Boulders Beach – a heartwarming sight! Our Cape Peninsula tour culminated at the dramatic mist-covered cliffs of Cape Point, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans embrace.

Wine Wonderland: Stellenbosch

Day two saw us indulging in the finer things in life – wine! We explored the renowned wine regions of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. At Beyerskloof Wine Estate, we sampled the robust Pinotage, a true South African gem. Our sommelier, Jacques had us enthralled, as he took us on a taste journey like no other. Lunch at Waterford Estate was a gourmet delight, paired with exquisite wines and our day ended at the luxurious Delaire Graff Estate, where fine wine, breathtaking scenery, and stunning art surrounded us.

Into the Wild: Kruger National Park

Our journey then took us to the legendary Kruger National Park. Staying at The Orpen Kruger Lodge, we had the perfect base to explore the central region of the park. The wildlife sightings were nothing short of phenomenal – elephants, giraffes, and even a cheetah made special appearances, much to our delight.

But the magic didn't stop there. We ventured into the Balule Game Reserve, where Nyala Safari Lodge offered us a private oasis. Here, we had jaw-dropping encounters with white rhinos, a male lion on his nocturnal patrol, and a majestic leopard as it casually lounged in a tree.

Victoria Falls: The Smoke That Thunders
Next up was Zimbabwe's crown jewel, Victoria Falls. The group was awestruck by the sheer power and beauty of this World Heritage Site. A breakfast boat cruise on the mighty Zambezi River added a serene touch to the adventure, with hippos and crocodiles joining for breakfast (from a safe distance, of course!).

Botswana’s Elephant Paradise: Chobe National Park
In Botswana, the group delved into the wonders of Chobe National Park, renowned for its massive herds of elephants. Safari drives here were a feast for the eyes, with wildlife appearing around every bend. A large male lion offered exceptional photographic opportunities as he walked through the soft sands in search of his pride.

Luxury Afloat: Namibia’s Caprivi RegionThe grand finale was a luxurious houseboat cruise along Namibia's Caprivi Strip. From the comfort of the deck, the group enjoyed unparalleled game viewing, watching animals gather at the water's edge, and enjoying sundowners as herds of elephants and buffalo made their way to the water's edge.

We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to craft an unforgettable trip for these four friends, who have also become our friends. Until the next adventure, keep exploring and stay wild!!

Levin Family Safari Trip Report

The Levin family's private safari adventure began in the breathtaking city of Cape Town, where the iconic Table Mountain dominates the skyline. Staying in the Blouberg area, they had panoramic views of the mountain that seemed to change colors with the shifting light throughout the day. This served as the perfect backdrop for the start of their journey, with adventures in Cape Town's Peninsula Route and the famous Boulder's Beach penguin colony awaiting them.

Above: Boulders Beach Penguin Colony

Since the whole family are avid foodies, Cape Town's vibrant food scene was a major highlight. They visited some of the city's renowned food markets and dined at exquisite restaurants. The rich blend of cultures in Cape Town offered an array of culinary delights that satisfied their gourmet cravings, from freshly caught seafood to traditional South African dishes.

A short flight then brought them to Hoedspruit, where Hylton and I guided them in our open safari vehicle, ready to explore the magnificent landscapes and diverse wildlife of Kruger National Park. Our base was The Orpen Lodge, a charming and intimate retreat on the outskirts of the park. This setting provided a serene atmosphere and easy access to the 2 million hectare wilderness.

From the very first afternoon game drive, we were rewarded with incredible wildlife sightings. The white lion of the Birmingham pride made an impressive appearance, an extremely rare sighting that left everyone in awe. We also encountered a pack of endangered African wild dogs, which are seldom seen in the wild due to their low population. A near-hunt by cheetahs had everyone on the edge of their seats as a spotted cat almost caught an impala. The sight of a lioness carrying a cub in her mouth as she crossed the path in front of us was equally mesmerizing. These are the moments that make safaris so magical.

Elephants, giraffes, and zebras were frequent companions during our drives, but I was especially thrilled when we came across a partially leucistic dwarf mongoose—an extraordinary phenomenon I had never seen before.

Above: A protective lioness and her cub in the Kruger National Park

The family's fascination with wildlife and their interest in local culture inspired us to arrange a unique village tour in Welverdiend. Guided by a local expert from the Nourish EcoVillage, we saw the challenges faced by community members due to a lack of basic amenities like running water and sanitation. Visiting the local crèche, the Levin children had the opportunity to make new friends, engaging in games and laughter, creating a genuine connection that transcended language and cultural barriers.

Above: Learning the traditional skill of mat-weaving in the Welverdiend Village.

Before leaving the Orpen region, we visited the Moholoholo Animal Rehabilitation Center, a remarkable organization dedicated to rescuing injured, orphaned, and endangered wildlife. This experience deepened the family's understanding of the threats faced by African wildlife and the important work being done to protect these creatures.

Our journey continued to the Balule Game Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger National Park, where we stayed at Mohlabetsi Safari Lodge. Here, we had extraordinary encounters with rhinos. On our first drive, we watched a rare interaction between a black rhino cow and a calf with a white rhino bull. It was heartwarming to see the young black rhino playfully head-butting the white rhino bull, something neither Hylton nor I had ever witnessed in the wild.

Above: White Rhino and Black rhino encounter

The excitement didn't end there. Lion sightings were abundant, and we were privileged to follow a pride as they roared to assert their territory in the early morning rays. A night drive revealed the elusive leopard, a graceful female who walked right toward our vehicle, illuminated by our headlights. It was a sight to remember, her spots glowing against the darkness.

Above: Fun in the Balule Game Reserve

The Levin family's safari adventure was truly one for the books, filled with unforgettable moments and unique encounters. We are grateful to Joshua, Laura, Hallie, Lucy, and Ruby for allowing us to design their custom safari and for trusting us to make their safari dreams a reality. As we said our goodbyes, we knew that these memories would last a lifetime, and we can't wait to plan our next African Safari adventure together.

A Rare Encounter on Safari: Black and White Rhinos at the Waterhole

A South African safari is always an adventure, but every once in a while, the wilderness gifts you with a truly extraordinary sighting. Last week, while hosting an American family on a private safari, we experienced just such a moment—one that will be etched in our memories for years to come.

We were on a late afternoon game drive on a private game reserve, when, as we approached a waterhole, the golden hues of the autumn bushes framed a scene that stunned us all: a black rhino cow with her young calf. This alone was a rare and exhilarating sight, given that black rhinos are one of the most endangered species in Africa, with fewer than 7,000 left in the wild.

However, what made this encounter even more remarkable was the presence of a white rhino bull just a few feet away. Generally, these two species don't interact with each other. Black rhinos are browsers, preferring to eat from bushes and trees, while white rhinos are grazers, favoring grasslands. This difference in diet and behavior usually keeps them apart, making this encounter truly unique.

The scene before us was filled with tension. The black rhino cow was clearly agitated, perhaps feeling threatened by the white rhino's proximity to her calf. She began to snort and paw at the ground, displaying classic signs of aggression. The white rhino bull, however, seemed remarkably unbothered, lounging near the waterhole, taking slow sips, and occasionally glancing at the mother and her calf.

What happened next was truly astonishing. As the white rhino bull lay down to rest, the black rhino cow continued to harass him, walking up toward him and attempting to drive him away. The young calf, mimicking its mother's behavior, even prodded the much larger white rhino with its tiny horn. Despite the difference in size and strength, the calf's boldness was striking.

Hylton and I, along with our guests, watched in awe as this rare interaction unfolded before us. The drama continued for quite some time, with the black rhino cow persistently challenging the white rhino. This was a once-in-a-lifetime sighting—one that reminded us of the incredible complexity and unpredictability of nature. To witness such a rare interaction between two distinct species, especially involving the critically endangered black rhino, was a privilege and a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts.

As we drove away, we couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share this special moment with our guests. It was a safari experience they—and we—would never forget.

A Wildlife Tracker: Do You Have What It Takes?

Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to work alongside Colin Patrick, a world-renowned tracker trainer, as we assisted a group of Bushwise Field Guide students in their preparation for tracking assessments in the Makalali Game Reserve. It was an experience that truly highlighted the essential skills and dedication required to become a proficient wildlife tracker and safari guide.

One of the cornerstones of the tracking process is based on the Cybertracker evaluation system. This system is based on two different evaluation components: Track & Sign, and Trailing, and combined offers a candidate the opportunity to get a formally accredited Tracker qualification- essential for all aspiring guides and trackers wanting to enter the wildlife industry.

The Track & Sign component assesses a tracker's ability to identify tracks and signs left behind by various animals, ranging from the majestic elephant to the tiniest mouse, and even the intricate trails of a scorpion's tail dragging in the dust, or where a leaf had blown in the wind. This component serves as the foundational ABCs of tracking, providing students with the essential knowledge and base needed to decipher the secrets of the bush.

During the assessment, students were tasked with pointing out and interpreting tracks and signs encountered in the field. This involved keen observation skills and a deep understanding of animal behavior and habitat. From identifying the remnants of a bird's dust bath to recognizing the subtle imprints left by passing wildlife, each track told a story waiting to be unraveled.

The second component of the assessment focused on trailing, where students, under the expert guidance of Colin Patrick, embarked on the exhilarating pursuit of following animal tracks. One particularly memorable experience was trailing a group of white rhinos that had traversed the reserve during the night.

For hours, students meticulously followed the trail, tracing the rhinos' movements through feeding grounds, watering holes, and muddy wallows. Every detail, from trampled grass to resting spots in sandy drainage lines, provided valuable insights into the rhinos' behavior and movements.

The significance of tracking proficiency in the guiding industry cannot be overstated. Exceptional trackers and guides possess the ability to locate key species that guests yearn to encounter during safari adventures. Whether it's tracking a pride of lions on the hunt or locating a hidden leopard in the dense undergrowth, the skills acquired through tracking courses are invaluable assets for aspiring guides.

As you reflect on this journey into the world of wildlife tracking, I invite you to consider whether you have what it takes to become a proficient tracker. Are you captivated by the challenge of deciphering nature's clues? Do you possess the patience and perseverance required to follow in the footsteps of Africa's iconic wildlife?

If you feel the call of the wild stirring within you, I encourage you to explore the possibility of embarking on a tracking course. Whether you're a seasoned nature enthusiast or a curious explorer, there's no better time to delve into the captivating world of wildlife tracking. Who knows? Perhaps you'll uncover a hidden talent and set forth on a path of discovery and adventure unlike any other.

March Madness: Notes from the field

A Rare Encounter: Temminck's Ground Pangolin

Temminck's Ground Pangolin by Margaux Langley

During an early morning drive in Kruger National Park, an extraordinary encounter unfolded – one that few are lucky enough to witness. While traversing the grassy plains, our group was fortunate to stumble upon the elusive Temminck's Ground Pangolin.

This nocturnal and rare creature, known for its unique armor-like scales and elusive nature, appeared in broad daylight, a rare occurrence indeed! To highlight the rarity of this sighting, it was Margaux's first encounter with a pangolin in Kruger National Park, despite living and guiding within the reserve for over 17 years!

The Temminck's pangolin is among the four African pangolin species, with a distribution spanning from northern South Africa to East Africa, including parts of Sudan and Chad. It is the second-largest pangolin species, typically weighing between 7 to 12 kg and reaching lengths of up to 1.2 meters. Classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, Temminck's pangolin faces population declines.

Our group fell into a hushed silence as we marveled at this rare sighting, a true testament to the conservation efforts aimed at protecting this remarkable species.

The white lioness and cubs galore

The white lioness of the Birmingham pride taken by Margaux Langley

During a multi-day safari in the central parts of Kruger National Park, we had the incredible opportunity to encounter the renowned Birmingham Pride near Orpen Gate. What sets this pride apart is the presence of two snow-white members, a rarity in the park where only four white lions exist.

This unique phenomenon is called "Leucism," a genetic condition causing partial pigmentation loss in animals. Unlike albinism, where melanin is completely absent, animals with leucism may retain some pigment in their eyes or other body parts.

We spotted an adult female and a white cub amongst the pride, observing them as they leisurely strolled along a game trail and drank from a pool before disappearing into the bush. It was a momentous sighting that left us beaming from ear to ear.

Wild Dog Chase: A Memorable Safari Finale

The endangered African Wild dog at play by Margaux Langley

One of our guests, a seasoned safari-goer with a particular longing to spot the highly endangered African Wild Dog, joined us for an adventure in Kruger National Park.

With their population in the park totaling less than 250 and their vast roaming grounds, we understood the rarity of such an encounter.

However, luck favored us on our last morning as we stumbled upon a pack near Tamboti Camp. The pack created quite a spectacle, engaging in a chase with a brave blue wildebeest bull. In a surprising turn of events, the wildebeest stood its ground and even chased the dogs, resulting in a comical scene reminiscent of a cat-and-mouse game. Our guests couldn't have been happier, capturing thousands of photos to etch this unforgettable encounter into memory.

One of the key factors that sets South Africa apart is its excellent accessibility. With well-connected international airports such as OR Tambo International in Johannesburg and Cape Town International Airport, travelers can easily reach their safari destinations. This ease of access not only saves time but also contributes to a stress-free beginning and end to your safari adventure.

Affordability in Comparison to Other Countries:

Unlike some safari destinations that have specific seasons for optimal wildlife viewing, South Africa is a year-round safari haven.
